A Squeezable Willy Nilly - Late

So, instead of spending my Saturday morning on the computer, I planned to clean out the laundry/mud room, which is a horrid mess and will only get worse with the onset of winter. Guess where I am? Yep, sitting at the computer. I missed posting for Willy Nilly yesterday, but 'they' say, "Better late than never." Right? This week we are to post 5 things we should or shouldn't squeeze. So  here are my five:

1. The first thing that comes to mind is—Zits! Ugh! Never squeeze them. Gross! I was traumatized in high school by someone, who will remain annonymous, squeezing a zit in study hall!

2. Grandkids! Love grabbing them up and squeezing them tight. Now that they are getting older, they will probably start running away when they see me coming.

3. I squeeze tomatoes and fruits to see if they are ripe enough to suit me. JD is quick to chastise. Something about bruising. Then how will I really know they are ripe?

4. There is the toothpaste tube. I squeeze it until I'm sure I've gotten every possible bit on my toothbrush. A legacy from my father who lived through the great depression and was always frugal.

5. When target shooting, one must squeeze the trigger. I'm learning to shoot JD's handgun. I'm not a big fan of guns, but after our uninvited guest a few weeks ago, I decided learning would be a good thing.

Now may as well post a critter. Video of Fergus seeing snow for the first time.
Guess we better be prepared. The weatherman is predicting a bad winter!

A Gate Fence

It's Thursday! One more day and then two days off. It sure feels like fall around here. Our predicted high is a mere 62° with overcast skies. I like the cooler temps but dreading winter. The leaves are starting to fall from a couple of the trees in our backyard. They are the last to get leaves in the spring and the first to lose them in the fall. They are big trees though and do make nice shade during the hot summer months.

I believe this person found a deal on gates. A 2 for 1 special?

Wednesday Hodge Podge

1. On Thursday we pause to remember a dark day in history-9/11. Will you mark it in some special way?

I will remember with a heavy heart, say a prayer for the deceased and their families and a prayer of thanks for the life of my good friend who worked in one of the towers but is alive and well today. It will also be a day of celebration. It is Punky Doodle's birthday.

2. Do you ever/still...listen to an actual radio? Watch a videotape (VCR)? Look up a number in a phonebook? Refer to a paper map while traveling? Set an alarm on an alarm clock as opposed to your phone?

I often go to work early, before anyone else is there. There are often unexplainable noises, so I put in my earbuds and listen to the radio. Occasionally I still record shows on the old VCR. I didn't realize how poor the quality was until we got one of those new fangled tvs. I looked up a phone number in the phone book yesterday, although it has probably been over a year since I looked inside one. I always take a paper map with me when traveling, just in case Gertie (our GPS) gets lost as she has done a couple of times. I also set an alarm clock every night. Of course I don't trust it, so also set the alarm on my phone.

3.  Is it ever a good idea to discuss religion or politics with people you don't know?

My opinion, NEVER! I don't even like to discuss religion and politics with people I do know. It can cause bad feelings.

4. What's a dish you haven't eaten all summer, but come September find yourself craving? Have you made it yet this month?

Chili. Haven't made it yet, but it's supposed to be chilly Saturday, which would probably be a good day to make Chili.

5. What's something you know nothing about?

Gosh, can't think of a thing. Which doesn't mean I know something about everything. It merely means my mind has gone blank.

6. September is Classical Music Month. Do you like classical music? If so, what's your favorite piece?

I used to go to the symphony occasionally when I lived in the city.  Love classical music specifically played on the piano. I can't decide on one piece, but I like the up tempo Rondo alla Turca by Mozart and Hungarian Dance by Brahms. Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven is high among my favorites. But my all time favorite is Trumpet Voluntary by Jeremiah Clarke, played on the trumpet, of course. I'll always think of Punky Doodle walking down the aisle when I hear it.

7. What's the oldest thing you own?

My house. It was built in 1925. No, wait. I have a pocket watch my paternal grandfather gave to my grandmother as a wedding gift in 1906. It doesn't work, but it is beautiful. Reminds me of black hills gold. I'll post a picture for Rubbish Tuesday one of these weeks.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

It's Wednesday, my second favorite day of the week. My favorite is Saturday. Wednesday because I have lots of work on Monday and Tuesday and this is a catch up day. Saturday because I don't have to go to work and I don't have to go to work the next day either. However, after taking these pics of the golfinch out back I see one of my Saturdays needs to be spent power washing the fence!

Our sunflowers were all looking at the ground, so hubs cut them off and placed them on the fence for the birds to have easy access.  They seem to like them there, but my only option is to take pics through the door glass. If I open the door, they are gone!

Rubbish Tuesday #19

"The Reuben Moore Home State Historic Site stands among the remnants of what is known as the Farmington settlement. It is about one mile north of Lincoln Log Cabin, the home of Abraham Lincoln's father and stepmother. In late 1856 Reuben Moore built the house and moved in with his wife, Matilda Hall (Abraham Lincoln's stepsister) and five children from their previous marriages. Matilda lived in the farm house for several years after Reuben's death in 1859. In January of 1861 Abraham Lincoln bid farewell to his stepmother, Sarah Bush Lincoln at the Moore home on his way to the White House. The Moore home features beautifuly restored interior, including stenciled walls, a grained manel, marbelized shelves, and lovely furniture pieces from the 1860s. The burial site of Thomas Lincoln and Sarah Bush Lincoln is located a mile west of the Moore Home in Shiloh Cemetery." ~ Wikipedia

Sadly, the house is rarely open to the public so I have never seen inside.

This is the front of the house. It once had a covered porch. You can see where it once was.

This is the back. It looks to be in better condition than the front, but the whole house is in dire need of a fresh coat of paint. Sadly, our State has cut spending.

This is a shed in the back.

And, of course, the outhouse.

The lawn and trees are beautiful, but there are no flowers. As I mentioned, the State has cut funding, so there isn't money to maintain a garden.

Thanks for stopping by. I hope you will join in the fun.

My idea was to have a place to post 'old things'. Anything old
and/or deteriorating such as, but not limited to, old houses, barns, outbuildings, old cars, rusty things, antiques, interesting junk, or it can be something in pristine condition, but just old.

1. Link to a post featuring photos of something old.
2. Link back to Rubbish by Roan in your post.
3. As time allows, visit other participants and comment on their posts.
